Using Sport as a Catalyst for Opportunity, Inclusion, and Life Skills

Sport is one of the few pathways to opportunity for youth in the Bojanala District and North West Province, but poverty, unemployment, and unstable home environments place young athletes at high risk of dropping out, injury, substance abuse, and short-term survival choices. Grassroots clubs lack essential support services like mental health care, medical support, nutrition, and career guidance, leaving athletes without holistic development. Social pressures—especially on boys and young men—discourage seeking help, while girls and young women face gender-based violence, limited access to resources, and competing caregiving responsibilities. Transgender and non-binary athletes experience discrimination, exclusion, and safety risks, with few inclusive support options. Coaches, parents, schools, healthcare providers, and sponsors are also under strain due to limited training, high costs, weak monitoring systems, and lack of career pathway knowledge.
